Mayor won't seek vacated senate seat

Granbury mayor David Southern announced Thursday that he will not seek the District 22 senate seat being vacated by Republican Kip Averitt. "I'm not running (for that seat). I'm running for mayor," Southern said, referring to the spring city and school elections. Averitt announced several days ago that he will step down next week. The governor will then call a special election, likely for May 8.
B/G Club has Spring Break Camp (Posted Today 12:46 pm)

United Coop power restored after brief outage

Power has been restored to an area in far east Granbury that had gone dark Wednesday night when an electrical recloser failed, according to Marty Haught, a representative from United Coop. Haught said that the power loss was reported at 8:05 p.m., and that all 1,067 United Coop members affected had their power back on by 8:58 p.m. Hood County fire marshal Brian Fine said a minor grass fire that began on an electrical pole was under control in the area of Old Granbury Road at Fall Creek Highway, but Haught said the actual cause of the outage was unknown until workers had time to investigate.
No injuries reported in Wednesday morning crash

Two eastbound Ford pickups collided Wednesday morning in the 3600 block of Highway 377 West, but no injuries were reported. A Clifton man was turning left when a Dublin man was attempting to pass, a DPS trooper said. The Clifton man's vehicle crashed through a wooden fence.
Yancy to seek senate seat in special election

Darren Yancy has announced he will seek a place on the ballot for a special election expected to be called by the governor for the District 22 state senate race. State Sen. Kip Averitt announced he will resign, effective noon next Wednesday. Averitt had suspended his campaign for re-election in January, citing health reasons, but it was too late to have his name removed from the ballot. He won the primary with 60 percent of the vote to Yancy's 40 percent. Governor Rick Perry is expected to call a special election for Saturday, May 8. Local citizens will be going to the polls on that day for city and school elections.
County clerk's office to be closed at lunchtime next week

The county clerk's office at Annex II (across from Granbury City Hall), as well as the office at the Justice Center on Pearl Street, will be closed from noon until 1 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week due to staff software training. Usually, the offices are open to the public during that time.
Man, 70, injured as motorcycle crashes on Contrary Creek Road

A 70-year-old Pecan Plantation man failed to make a curve on his 2007 Honda 919 motorcycle Tuesday afternoon in the 4500 block of Contrary Creek Road, according to a DPS trooper at the scene. He suffered an ankle injury, the trooper said, and was taken to an area hospital.
Two area women facing felony drug charges

Catherine Denise Miller, 38, of Sandy Beach, and Charlotte Kay McLaurin, 41, of Glen Rose, were arrested recently in Hood County on felony drug charges, sheriff's captain Jerry East said. Miller was charged with possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), East said. McLaurin was found in possession of 6.9 grams of crack cocaine, East said, which qualifies as a first-degree felony.

Through Tuesday, forecasters expect early morning lows to stay around 40 and daytime highs in the 60s, except in the mid-70s Saturday and Sunday. There's a 20 percent chance of a thunderstorm brewing up Thursday afternoon, 30 percent Thursday night.
